Q - How certain were you that an original mahou shoujo anime would become a hit?
The broadcast of the final episode which straddled the earthquake
──Director Shinbo, when the broadcast of the episodes after ep. 10 was postponed because of the Great East Japan Earthquake on Mar 11, what was it like?
Shinbo: [Before the quake struck] the Kansai region [around Osaka] already had the ep. 10 broadcast, but in the afternoon of the day when Kanto region [around Tokyo] was supposed to have the ep. 10 broadcast the quake struck, and of course we could not broadcast it. To talk a bit about some personal matter, in the night of that day the mansion where I live was supposed to have scheduled electricity outage due to works for the electrical system, and I thought "I could not record the broadcast of the anime I myself made...". I had been making anime and this was the first time this happened. But because the quake struck that day, sure enough neither the works nor the electricity outage took place. The result was even the broadcast did not take place either.
──And after the postponement, the broadcast of the final part was set to late midnight on Apr 21.
Shinbo: As the last 3 episodes were broadcast in a row in the Kanto region, I was able to record ep. 10 at home just as usual.... Surely to me this anime has become something that is inextricably linked to the real life situation. The screenplay for Madoka Magica was completed more than one and a half year before but notwithstanding that, the production work could not meet the actual scheduled broadcast date and so we had it postponed. If we had followed the original broadcast schedule, it would not have overlapped with the earthquake.... We were able to fine-tune the plot and that itself was good, but what if it had not been like that (lol). It is indeed a marvelous work.
──For the broadcast of the final episode, we saw an amazing amount of posting on the internet, centered around 2ch and NicoNico.
Shinbo: In the past, the experience of going to see a movie that was adapted from an anime I watched on TV, to me it was truly some event. I think something close to that happened coincidentally at the end of the TV series. Besides there were 3 episodes, making it one and a half hour, the length of one movie, and everyone watched it together in the middle of the night. It seems to me it became a big event created by the internet coming together. I think it is great that things turned out that way, though of course broadcast episode by episode would add to the profundity.
On the internet, as I know the close study by people who were watching the show was impressive. Urobuchi-san, who wrote the screenplay, even said "now almost everything is being exposed." (LOL). For the reactions from the internet, if they are good the mood in the production site will turn better, but if they are bad everyone will get depressed. It shows up explicitly. So I told everyone "Don't check. Just keep working." (LOL) It is fine if things go well, but in case it is not it will be scary to be honest. I really want to say "Shouldn't I not mind it so much?"
The original will not succeed if it does not give rise to divided opinions
──In the first place why did you want to do an original mahou shoujo anime?
Shinbo: I got involved in the first season of the TV series "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha". That one had quite a lot of fighting scenes. So this time at first I had in my mind a conventional mahou shoujo anime that is more familiar. But on the other hand, deep down I still love action and combat, I feel eventually I was still drawn towards that.
In the beginning there were 2 proposals coming from Producer (Atsuhiro) Iwagami of Aniplex. First, a proposal to get Aoki Ume-san, who helped the anime adapation of "Hidamari Sketch" a manga with many heartwarming touches, to be the character designer. And I thought "it may just work." And the other one was raising the name of Urobuch-san for writing the screenplay. I got myself a novel named "Fate/Zero" and read it, and I found it very interesting. Since times past I had the thought that "I really want to try to do an action work with supernatural power like "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure," and I got the same kind of feeling with "Fate/Zero." I thought it would be interesting if I can do a mahou shoujo anime on that line.
──It was quite a shock to see how the character "Kyubey" was designed.
Shinbo: As Aoki-san drew a cute mascot character, I thought "that looks good." For me, at first I just planned to draw it as such and then let watchers notice the growing discrepancy...but since naturally other staff members had to read the screenplay in advance, somehow they ended up drawing a hateful character. (LOL) And it was something even I could not fully control, so I gave up after a while. As for Kyubey's mouth not moving when it was speaking, it was because I could not shake off the discongruous feeling for an animal to speak in human languages, so I created the image of it talking as if by telepathy. As a result, that just multiplied its eeriness.
If I have to describe Kyubey, it would be a Michael Sandel-esque character. Especially the part, "which side will you help?" As I had just finished that book then, I thought "Ah, it is good that this is easy to understand."
──From what we heard, there was no certainty of a hit at the beginning.
Shinbo: I could not tell how the watchers would take this work. And while this and that happened, in the screenplay by Urobuchi-san someone died by ep. 3 (LOL). I just thought I had to prepare for the worst. In particular, having a lovely character by Aoki-san doing that scene was almost like a gamble, since if it aroused bad feelings everything might have ended there.
But then particularly in the case of an original, if there is nothing that could create divided opinion, eventually in many cases the work will just sink in obscurity. In the last 10 years within the anime industry there has been a feeling of being stuck. More and more we feed by making adaptation. And at this moment of everyone turning more and more introspective, once in a while we got a chance of making an original story. But if this should fail the industry may get even more stuck, so it was my true feeling that "I managed to scrape through without failing". With the 7pm slot for anime in the evening disappeared, as a result we now see a lot more anime made for hardcore fans, and if something turned out to be missing it will not sell at all. It is such a harsh age.
What is good about an original is that everyone can watch it without being able to tell what is going to happen. If this could become the trigger for original works to attract more attention, I think we may be able to see the light at the end.

Q. What is the root of "mercilessness", said to be the characteristic of works by Urobuchi?
The backing for things, social network style
──At first, in order not to let anyone notice the grim development that came after ep. 3, there was a proposal not to disclose you, Urobuchi-san in the credits. Did you also pay particular attention to your own twitter?
Urobuchi: Advertisement for "Madoka Magica" started from Sept to Oct last year and I thought it would be a seriously awkward issue if people got notice of Madoka from my twitter and started to give comments as a result.... Around that time, I started to write about various movies and said things like "I watched Avatar. It's super cool!" Once this went on for a while, I got to say things like "I watched The Expendables" etc etc (LOL). I started paying attention in a weird way. Even in twitter, I think it would be dangerous if I do not consider helping the marketing in some way.
On "Madoka" that in fact backfired, as it was so obviously suspicious (LOL). All of a sudden, seeing me writing about something I scarcely wrote about, those who followed my twitter would just think "this guy is trying to play dumb," and instead raised the alarm (LOL). I realized that things did not go as I wanted it too.
──How about [Madoka] having gained such popularity in media centering around the internet?
Urobuchi: Honestly, though I do not to mean to belittle what everyone made together, it is my true feeling to say that I was surprised. Of course be it Aoki-san or Shinbo-san, as well as all from Shaft, all are absolutely reliable. There is no doubt that something good came out as a result. Even bearing this in mind I still feel bewildered that the feedback was a bit too over the top. But then I think there we certainly see backing in social network style. The way of how anime is watched has changed....
Now customers keep posting their thoughts to the internet while watching the anime in real time. As NicoNico Douga allowed input of comments, doing such things in 2ch or other anonymous forums has become a matter of course. It is just like watching Rikidozan doing pro-wrestling on a TV at a street corner. There is the feel of a festivity coming from that sense of togetherness. It is a sensation of enjoying the on-air broadcast as an event. I can see there are ways to enjoy aspects outside of the contents from the anime itself. In some sense, it feels like show business. On the other hand, the approach of sitting alone right in front of TV and watch anime may be going into oblivion. Personally I am of opinion that video experience is a private matter, but I have a feeling that that kind of thought is now behind times.
The resistance to the realist in one self
──Facing the request of writing a screenplay for a mahou shoujo anime, what is the first thing that came up in your mind?
Urobuchi: I first considered how to bring out the distinctive qualities of Shinbo-san and Aoki-san. Also since Producer Iwagami-san picked me after reading "Fate/Zero" I also thought that I had to take his intention into account. Expelling expediency in approach, a certain kind of ruthlessness, cruelty and mercilessness. I sensed that it was probably a request for those things.
──It is common to bring up that mercilessness as a characteristic of Urobuchi's works. Where do you think such idea come from?
Urobuchi: I myself am in certain way a realist. And there is a resistance, or should I say self-hatred, towards this realist in oneself. This can come out quite bluntly in my works. If I am able to assimilate this realism properly, there would be no need to write anything in such a brutal way. The reason for me turning a story that could have been just fine written in a more gentle manner, into something gloomy and grim is because deep inside me, I find it hard to allow such thing. It could be due to the feeling that "I really want to get by in this world with a bit more romanticism." The thought of "I don't like this kind of story" ended up compelling me to write such story.
──What was your intention for using time loops settei(design) in the much acclaimed ep. 10?
Urobuchi: At the stage of creating the plot, I wanted to make Homura Akemi, the character who is a rival as well as close friend of the protagonist Madoka Kaname, to be a contrast to the protagonist, and have her stand still in one place and go round and round there. There was a vague intention to prepare the twist that, on the contrary, the protagonist that was making no progress had in fact started to step out earlier. So rather than saying there was an insistence regarding using time loops, the weight is heavier in bringing out the awareness of the issues regarding a character who had become unable to step forward. It is just that time loops are used to express that in an exaggerated manner.
Even for the same time slip approach, looping back one year and looping back ten years have completely different nuances. Therefore for looping back one month it is quite a short time span and is a loop where a human's sense of values do not change much. Thus it can be said that this is a gadget with strong nuance of stagnation of repetitions. The negative thought of "not being able to hold a vision for future" is symbolized as the time loops.
──Watching this anime from a post-earthquake viewpoint, one cannot help thinking that somehow it is linked to the recent nuclear power incident. Of course we know the screenplay was completed quite some time before that...
Urobuchi: Since I was a kid I have been called "obsessive about energy conservation" and I got quite compulsive in conserving electricity. Even before all these nuclear power and such, I always held resistance against all this excessive use of energy. When I first saw Venus Fort I was dumbfounded (LOL). They built one more building under the roof of the building and then created an artificial sky with installation of lights.... etc etc. Isn't it just way too excessive? If those people from the other side of the Earth who are living a life of always worrying if they may or may not have enough to eat should see this, I think they might even feel the impulse to kill.
Don't you think there is something wrong about how this country is using energy? I always believe that we should be a bit more concerned on energy use. On the day when I went out but forgot to switch off the aircon, I got really down the whole day. Since I have the memory, when I was a kid, of being made nervous with the thought of depletion of oil. Hoarding toilet paper was from another generation, but the education by parents and the surrounding atmosphere all imbued me with such awareness. The awareness regarding resources.....
But then that was only made apparent because of what coincidentally happened recently. The idea may have been alive in all the works I have done so far. A story is something like a mirror. How the awareness of issues bounce back to the watcher is part of the fun.

Q. Is there a web service you want to team up with in future?

Not in the future. Recently we teamed up with the netcast site called NicoNico Douga. Since there is almost no midnight anime that can be broadcast by a country-wide network, I think little by little the idea of using internet to distibute new anime to fans who live outside the tv broadcast regions will take hold. Awareness of "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" jumped quickly after it started to broadcast and I think there were many fans who jumped in the middle and caught up with the story by using netcast distribution.
